Moving Insurance 101: Released Value vs. Full Value Protection

⚡ Quick Summary

The Basics: Every mover includes a free, basic protection called Released Value Protection. It pays out by weight, not real value.

The Catch: Released Value pays around $0.60 per pound per item. A 30 lb TV worth $1,000 would get you about $18 if it is damaged.

The Upgrade: Full Value Protection covers repair, replacement, or the current market cost of the item, and is priced against the real weight and declared value of your shipment.

The Action: Ask us about valuation options when you book your move, especially if you own high-value electronics, art, or antiques.

Moving Insurance vs. Valuation: What’s the Real Difference

Most people say “moving insurance,” but in this industry the correct term is usually valuation coverage. It’s a subtle distinction, but it matters. Valuation is the mover’s built-in liability for your goods while they’re in their care, and it’s regulated as part of your moving contract, not a separate insurance policy you buy from an insurer.

There are two main levels of valuation you’ll be offered on almost any move: Released Value Protection, which comes free with every move, and Full Value Protection, which you can add for a cost tied to the weight and value of your shipment. Understanding the gap between the two is the difference between a minor inconvenience and a genuinely upsetting loss if something gets damaged.

Released Value Protection Explained

Released Value Protection is the default coverage baked into your moving contract at no extra charge. The catch is right there in the name: your compensation is based on the weight of the item, not what it’s actually worth.

The industry standard rate is about $0.60 per pound per article. So picture a 30-pound flat-screen TV worth $1,000. If it gets damaged beyond repair, released value coverage pays out roughly 30 times $0.60, or about $18. That’s obviously nowhere close to replacing it.

This is fine for boxes of books, kitchen supplies, or things you wouldn’t be devastated to lose. It’s a much bigger problem for electronics, art, musical instruments, or anything light but expensive.

Full Value Protection Explained

Full Value Protection is the upgraded option. Under this coverage, if an item is lost, destroyed, or damaged beyond repair, the mover has to either repair it, replace it with a similar item, or pay you the current market replacement cost, your choice.

The industry rule of thumb is that Full Value Protection has to cover your shipment at a minimum of $10 per pound of the total weight moved. So if your household goods weigh 5,000 pounds, your coverage can’t be set below $50,000 in total value, though you can declare a higher value if your actual belongings are worth more.

Because it costs more, some people are tempted to skip it. We’d push back gently on that instinct if you own anything genuinely valuable. The premium for Full Value Protection is usually a small fraction of what it would cost to actually replace a damaged item out of pocket.

Which One Do You Actually Need?

Honestly, it depends on what you own. If your move is mostly furniture, kitchenware, and clothes, and nothing you’d be heartbroken to lose, Released Value Protection might be an acceptable risk. If you’re moving a home office setup, a big TV, artwork, or family heirlooms, Full Value Protection is worth the extra line item on your quote.

A good rule: walk through your home before your move and mentally flag anything that’s light, expensive, and irreplaceable. If that list has more than one or two items, it’s a strong sign you should upgrade your coverage.

What About Third-Party Insurance?

Some moving companies also offer, or can point you toward, third-party cargo insurance through an outside insurer, separate from the mover’s own valuation coverage. This can sometimes offer broader protection, including for certain events valuation doesn’t cover.

If you have a homeowner’s or tenant’s insurance policy, it’s also worth a quick call to your insurer before moving day. Some policies extend limited coverage to belongings in transit. It costs nothing to ask, and it might mean you’re better covered than you realized.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is basic moving valuation the same as insurance?

Not exactly. Valuation is a level of liability built into your moving contract. True insurance is a separate policy from an insurer, which some movers can help connect you with.

2. How much does Released Value Protection actually pay?

Roughly $0.60 per pound per article, industry-wide. It is based on weight, not the item’s real value.

3. What is the minimum coverage for Full Value Protection?

The standard minimum is $10 per pound of your total shipment weight, though you can declare a higher value for a higher-value household.

4. Does Full Value Protection cost extra?

Yes, it is priced based on the weight and declared value of your shipment, unlike Released Value Protection, which is included free.

5. Should I upgrade coverage for electronics?

Generally yes. Electronics are a textbook example of items that are light in weight but expensive to replace, which is exactly where Released Value Protection falls short.

6. Will my home insurance cover items during a move?

Sometimes, partially. Call your insurer before moving day to ask what, if anything, is covered while your belongings are in transit.

7. Can I choose repair, replacement, or cash under Full Value Protection?

The mover typically chooses among repairing the item, replacing it with a similar one, or paying the current market cost, depending on the situation.

8. Do I need to declare high-value items separately?

Yes, it is a good idea. Tell your coordinator about anything unusually valuable, like art or antiques, before moving day so it can be handled and covered correctly.
